The Evolution of Entertainment: What Life Would be like Without Music and Movies

Coming from a person who enjoys music, it would be hard to imagine my life where I couldn't just go to the music app and instantly play my favorite song. A lot of things I do in my daily life would change from listening to music while I shower, listening to music on my hour bus ride every day, and playing my music as loud as I can to annoy my parents (they love me, I promise). With this also comes the inability to watch movies and TV. Even though I hate to admit this, Netflix is a part of my daily life that I don't see changing in the near future. I watch Friends when I get home from school to aviod the starting my homework, I watch it in study skills (psshh what's homework??), and I watch movies on it with my family during "Family Night".
Without these technologies, I would be very dependent on my family. They provide free entertainment by being total goofballs and somewhat annoying. This would also make me closer with them because I would spend less time being consumed by my cell phone.

Wisal and I are both in the Wave 3 group for our media critique project, but she is online news reporter and I watch the newscast. While reading her blog post I noticed similar patterns between the Wave 3 website and the nightly newscast. This being that they make the important less interesting and spend less time on those stories. For example, Wave 3 spends on average about 6-7 minutes of their broadcast talking about sports. That's a wopping 1/3 of their show when you calculate in commercials for that 30 minute time period.  Wisal also noticed that there were a lot of sports articles on the website, and she felt like they could have cut back on the sports and include more important, pressing issues. I say the same about their newscast. Another example would be that they write/broadcast many stories that are purely for entertainment and not necessarily an event that all of the viewers HAD to know about. History in Journalism Class?? (Class Response)

On Tuesday in class we took another one question quiz but we also talked about the major timeline of the begginging of the printing press. For me, this lesson was very interesting because I am a big history person, social studies is one of my best and favorite subjects. I never realized what a game changer the printing press was to society because in my life we’ve always had them. The printing press allowed the expansion of European nations (Age of Exploration) and without it the Western World wouldn’t have been founded as soon. Movements and new ways of life also sparked from the new way to communicate. In comparison, the printing press when it was first invented was like invention of the internet. At their times, they both had a revolutionary impact on the world. They allowed people to share thoughts and ideas faster than ever before. Just think, what would today’s society look like without the internet?

So Many Magazines (class response)

I recently went out to get the mail from my mailbox and noticed there were several different magazines about completely different topics inside. This got me thinking about our class discussion about the rise and fall of magazines. Magazines were the first national media and the first to use photojournalism. They tried to reach a broad audience to sell more product. In the beginning of the 1800s magazines were very popular but that slowly started to change. After the invention of the TV, magazines were forced to demassify because of declining interest. They began targeting specific audiences which is why we have Food&Wine (cooking), People (celebrity), and Gold Digest (sports). Ever wonder why you don't see any of these topics combined into one magazine? Demassification is why. In class I really enjoyed learning about magazines because like most of what we have covered in journalism, everything can be seen in the real world.
